[WHO AM I]
I’m Emily Smith, a London-based photographer and artist specializing in fashion and portrait photography. With my lens, I try to capture the humane and indescribable, to communicate what longs to be heard but cannot be transmitted with words.
My story began at 14 when I found an old, dusty Canon T60 in my parents’ attic. Falling instantly in love with the magic of photography, I went on a spree, taking photos of my family, friends, and any stranger kind enough to let me shoot them. My work has gotten a lot better since.
One of the first things I learned was that pretty pictures can happen almost accidentally, but art needs to be deliberate. I take my time with every shoot, and though I don’t run from spontaneous photography, I prefer to spend time with my subjects – either in the studio or in the streets – to get to know them closely. To study everything that makes them unique. I recognize that each portrait tells someone’s story. I only take the shot once I feel we’ve captured the essence of their experience.
